An International CISM Course Promoted by the EULER Laboratory on Experimental Vibration Testing for Nonlinear System Identification

 

From April 26 to 30, 2027, the CISM – International Centre for Mechanical Sciences will host in Udine, Italy, the international course “Experimental Vibration Testing for Nonlinear System Identification”, also available online.

The CISM is a non-profit international organisation dedicated to advanced training and scientific exchange in the field of mechanical sciences and their interdisciplinary applications. Every year, it brings together researchers and experts from around the world to address cutting-edge research topics.

The course is coordinated by Stefania Lo Feudo, researcher at the EULER Laboratory, ISAE-SUPMECA (France), in collaboration with Nicolò Vaiana from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy). It is primarily aimed at PhD students and early-career academic or industrial researchers wishing to deepen their knowledge of dynamic identification methods applied to nonlinear mechanical and structural systems.

The course aims to bridge the gap between classical vibration testing methods and linear signal processing techniques and the latest approaches for measuring and identifying the dynamic properties of nonlinear systems.

The programme will cover, in particular:

  • Characterisation of vibratory responses, Operational Modal Analysis and signal processing;
  • Advanced measurement techniques, including computer vision, radar interferometry, nonlinear ultrasonics and fibre-optic sensing;
  • Experimental continuation, enabling the measurement of different response branches of nonlinear systems;
  • Experimental methods for strongly nonlinear systems, including contact and hysteresis phenomena;
  • Parameter identification, numerical model updating and ultrasonic damage identification;
  • New identification methods based on artificial intelligence, including Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs).

  • Nicolò Vaiana – University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

Practical sessions, including programming exercises, will complement the theoretical lectures. A poster session will also provide participants with an opportunity to present their research and exchange with other researchers attending the course.
