Ayech Benjeddou, university professor in ISAE-Supméca, is pleased to annouce the SMN20248th International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering, to be held in Sharjah (UAE), on 25-28 November 2024.

SMN2024 will be the eighth edition of the successful series of international conferences on smart materials and nanotechnology in engineering. It will serve as a nexus, connecting the dynamic advancements in smart materials and nanotechnology in engineering, catering to a wide array of applications. This conference has been promoted since 2007 by Professor Shanyi Du and Professor Jinsong Leng, from Harbin Institute of Technology (China). Past conference venues have included Harbin (China, 2007), Weihai (China, 2009), Shenzhen (China, 2011), Gold Coast (Australia, 2013), Vancouver (Canada, 2015), Madrid (Spain, 2017), and Harbin (China, 2019).

Smart materials are active and multifunctional materials capable of transduction (energy conversion) and actuation functions, which have been widely applied in many fields like aerospace, automotive, mechanical and civil engineering, and advanced manufacturing. With the rapid development of nanotechnology, the hybrid combination of nanomaterials and smart materials is emerging as a hot and frontier topic in recent years, and related research and applications in intelligent bionics, biomedicine, robotics and flexible electronics, among others, continues fast growth.

SMN2024 aims at providing a comprehensive forum for discussing current state of the art of smart materials and nanotechnology in engineering as well as developing future ideas on a multidisciplinary level, with emphasis on integration of smart materials and nanotechnology in engineering. The conference will bring together the best research and applications on smart materials, structures and nanotechnology in engineering.

Journée mesures de champs en dynamique des structures 2018 (one-day conference dedicated to field measurements in Structural Dynamics)

This event dedicated to field measurements in structural dynamics called Mesure de champs en dynamique des structures will be held at Supméca on 20 June 2018– GST 14 Bruit et Vibrations (scientific and technical group no. 14 of the French Association of Mechanics dedicated to noise and vibrations) – GTT Mesures de champs (transversal thematic group dedicated to field measurements).

Goals

Field measurements are growing in use in structural dynamics. Nowadays they cover new applications beyond the framework of modal analysis that these techniques used to be limited to.

Therefore, Laser Doppler velocimetry and imaging technologies can now be found in the following applications:

  • identification and interpretation of local phenomena (deformation fields);
  • utilisation of vibration-fatigue data in the context of design processes;
  • study of the losses caused by contacts in assemblies (damping);
  • analysis of nonlinear vibrations (measurement of displacement fields related to harmonics, measurement of limit cycles);
  • measurement and analysis of the vibration behaviour of structures that are not compatible with contact sensors (e.g. rotating machines, lightweight structures);
  • measurement of velocity fields in the context of architectured as well as periodically and hierarchically structured materials;
  • (contactless) identification of anisotropic mechanical properties (stiffness) for complex geometries;
  • monitoring of the manufacturing processes.

Current challenges include the measurement of kinematic fields of very-low amplitudes for the characterisation of anti-vibration technologies that offer very-high attenuation, the real-time analysis of transitory fields, or the concomitant utilisation of complementary measurement resources by data fusion.

The use of these measurement methods among dynamicists and vibroacoustics specialists is still rather limited. This 2nd event dedicated to field measurements in structural dynamics called Journée Mesures de Champs en dynamique des structures (JMDC 2018) is the opportunity for users of 2D and 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry and users of imaging resources to share their feedback on the use of field measurement methods in structural dynamics.

Symposium on Mechanical Assemblies

The second symposium on mechanical assemblies that was held on 4 and 5 July 2017 at Supméca brought together more than 110 participants and attendees. This symposium that is unique in its field is organised by the Scientific & Technical Committee of the Supméca Alumni association of Supméca engineers. What makes this symposium relevant is that the level of performance and reliability required from components and structures across all industrial sectors today calls for innovative and tailored assembly solutions.

The purpose of the event was to review the landscape of modern mechanical assemblies by bringing together experts from several industrial sectors (in aeronautics and mechanics, as well as the space, automotive, railway and energy industries) and multiple companies (Airbus, Safran, EDF, Areva, Renault, PSA, SNR, Nexter Systems, Alstom, SNCF, etc.), in addition to academic stakeholders. In total there were 32 presentations on various research and development efforts.

The conference program included technical sessions on the following topics:

  • The evolution of assembly processes and approaches,
  • The practical application of advanced design methods,
  • Contact dynamics in mechanical linkages,
  • The prediction of in-operation behaviour,
  • Characterisation techniques used for mechanical assemblies,
  • The development of optimised, novel or innovative solutions.

Journées internationales francophones de tribologie (JIFT 2017) (international, French-speaking event dedicated to tribology)

This conference was organised by Supméca in collaboration with the Technical Centre for Mechanical Industry (CETIM) and held in May 2017 for the 29th time. It focused on “Tribology in Mechanical Innovations”.

It was an opportunity to take stock of recent research efforts, but also to propose technological solutions and present new advances in friction reduction or in the management of wear and optimisation of lubrication in the mechanical industry, in the areas of both modelling and experimentation. Therefore, this event enables to gain a better understanding of the ever more complex situations in modern tribology.

Each year, this conference is evidence of the increases in theoretical and industrial knowledge in the field of tribology, with regards to friction, lubrication and wear. It fosters discussions related to the understanding of contact, friction, wear, adhesion and lubrication phenomena, in the context of simple mechanisms as well as mechanical or biological systems, while also dedicating significant time to the topic of industrial challenges.
